First District One Room School House

The Harwinton Historical Society installed a new sign in front of the First District 1840 schoolhouse on Route 118 in 2023. Memorial contributions made in memory of the late Luella Pratt Bartes, along with a generous grant from Thomaston Savings Bank, were used to fund the sign which was designed and created by Giordano Signs of Torrington.

Bartes was a native of Harwinton who was a constant supporter of the Historical Society and a member of the organization’s Board of Directors. The new sign replaces one that was hand-carved by Howard Gomme of Plymouth which is now preserved in the Harwinton Historical Society collection. Gomme was a generous supporter of HHS until his death in 2021.
