Photograph of Silas & Mary (Johnson) Hart

Photograph of Silas & Mary (Johnson) Hart. Date Unknown. Harwinton Historical Society.
Donated by Mrs. Anna Hart Regner in 1989
Harwinton was established as an agricultural community. In the 18th and 19th centuries, the economy of Harwinton was primarily centered on small-scale agriculture. Located adjacent to the Naugatuck River, it offered rich soils and plentiful water supplies, which were crucial for farming.
The photograph of Silas and Mary Hart was donated by their daughter, Mrs. Eric Regner. The 1920 United States Federal Census lists Silas E. Hart as a 54-year-old white male born around 1866 in Connecticut. In 1920, he lived on a farm on Burlington Road in Harwinton, Litchfield, Connecticut, where he was the head of the household. [1]
Silas Hart was married to Marion Johnson. Both of his parents were also born in Connecticut. He worked as a farmer in the general farm industry, operating his own farm. He owned his home, although it was mortgaged, and he was literate, able to read and write. [2]
This photograph gives us a glimpse into the past citizens of our wonderful community, as well as a reminder of its agricultural history.
