Begins Restoration at Harwinton’s South Cemetery

Join us on Monday, July 8 from 9:30 – 11:30

What a difference two hours makes! Eight volunteers cleaned gravestones at South Cemetery on Friday, June 28. Symbols, inscriptions, and beautiful designs seemed to magically appear in this beautiful “outdoor museum” which is packed with artistic works. By the conclusion of our first workday, more than fifteen gravestones showcased their beauty. A good number of Harwinton’s Revolutionary War Patriots and additional residents who have come to rest in South Cemetery have had their gravestones cleaned of lichens, dirt, etc. HHS is very appreciative of Eileen Schmidt of East Litchfield for sharing her time/expertise.

Volunteers agreed it was most rewarding to see the incredible results! “Heartwarming”, “restored a realm of respect and honor”, “enjoyable”, “incredible to see the difference”, “relaxing”, “invigorating”, and “time seemed like several minutes rather than two hours” were some of the comments as we departed.

Liz, a senior at Lewis Mills High School, is working on her Girl Scout Gold Award and has chosen to focus on South Cemetery and Center Cemetery. Liz is working with us cleaning gravestones as well as additional sprucing up of our hollowed grounds. Be sure to save the afternoon of Saturday, October 12 (rain date Sunday, October 13) to attend the culminating event, “Stories Beneath the Stones”.

We’d love to have you join HHS Members/Friends in helping make South Cemetery on South Road an area of which we can all be proud.  We will continue our cleaning of gravestones on Monday, July 8 between 9:30-11:30. Please bring any of the following tools/supplies you have: soft bristle brushes, toothbrushes, bamboo chop sticks, wood tongue depressors, plastic putty knives, garden type sprayer, spray bottles, and jugs of water (our primary “magic cleaner”). At 11 a mason who works on gravestones has volunteered to show us how to do easy re-sets on the broken and toppled headstones. Bring shovels and levels if you are interested in this task. Thank you for your consideration. Your time and dedication are much appreciated.
